Stay safe when searching for housing
Roost is built exclusively for verified McMaster students, but it pays to be careful. Here's how to protect yourself.
Never pay before viewing
Never wire money, send an e-transfer, or pay a deposit before you've seen the property in person. Legitimate listers will always let you visit before you commit.
Meet in person, on campus
Arrange your first meeting somewhere public, like the Student Centre, Mills Library, or another campus location. Bring a friend if you're viewing a property alone.
Verify the listing is real
McMaster students who list on Roost are verified with a university email. If something feels off, like pressure to pay quickly, refusal to meet, or requests for unusual payment methods, trust your gut and don't proceed.
Report suspicious listings
If you suspect a listing is fraudulent, email us at support@getroost.ca and we will investigate immediately.
How Roost verifies students
Every listing on Roost is posted by a student with a verified @mcmaster.ca email address. That means you know exactly who you're renting from: a real McMaster student, not an anonymous landlord. Our verification process is your first line of defence against rental fraud.
Use the Ontario Standard Lease
Ontario law requires landlords to use a standard lease for most residential rentals. Before signing anything, ask your landlord to use the official Ontario Standard Lease. It protects both parties and is required by law.
